Parts of a Map: TODALS
In order to learn how to read maps, you will need to know the various parts of a map and how to use them. Just remember TODALS!
T-Title (name, topic, type of map)
O-Orientation (direction, compass rose)
D-Date (when, timeline, modern vs. ancient)
A-Author (who, perspective, cultural)
L-Legend (symbols, colors, details, labels)
S-Scale (size of the space in measurable terms)
Mapping Practice: Look at the map the United States: Fill in the boxes of each part of the map and its description.
