The American population has settlement patterns based on familiar ethncities. Historical events and patterns have caused the migration and settlement of many different ethnic groups within the United States.
There are two types of concentration patterns: Regional and Urban/Suburban

Look at the maps below and detemine what factors have created these regional settlment patterns:
Concentration of Ethncities in Cities
Ethnic clustering can be seen in the surburban areas of US cities. Many of the major urban centers in the US have ethnic clustering due to migration waves in the 1900s. Due to industralization and the availability of jobs in cities, many Southern and Eastern Europeans such as Italians, Polish, Greeks, Russians, etc. have migrated into cultural neighborhoods. We can see evidence of these concentrations in cities today. Think of Little Italy? Chinatown? Greek center?

As other ethnic groups moved into the cities for job opportunities, Europeans moved out of the cities and into the new suburbs. Inner city population was replaced by African Americans, Hispanic Americans, and Asian Americans.
