Economic push & pull factors
ECONOMIC PUSH AND PULL FACTORS
Most people migrate for economic reasons. Such push factors can include lack of job opportunities, poverty, bad economy, etc. Many people find other opportunities in different regions and/or countries that will provide the best standard of living for that particular person.
Some industries attract people to specfiic locations. Some places have an abundance of natural resources that pull people into the region. Look at the photos of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. below.
What kind of natural resource has had an effect on the migration and population growth in the region?
Look at the migration map into the United States:
Why do you think many people want to come to the USA? What perspective/hope do they have?
Cultural Push & PUll Factors
CULTURAL PUSH AND PULL FACTORS
Most cultural push factors have been international forced migration in the form of slavery and political instability. During the 18th century and 19th century, millions of people were shipped from other countries, especially West Africa, and sent to colonies to work hard labor as slaves.
Look at the map of Slave Migration. Where are most of the people being forced to migrate to?
During the 20th century, many people chose to migrate to new places to escape from political instability, wars, prejudice, and cutlural diversity. New boundaries created in Europe and Africa with many different ethnic groups caused many people to flee from their homelands and migrate to places like the United States.
A refugee is a person who has been forced to migrate from their home country and cannot return for fear of persecution because of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a social group or political opinion. Refugees seek asylum in other places until the conditions in their homelands improve. Many refugees live in tents, tenements, or in shelters.
Political conditions can operate as both pull and push factors. The idea of FREEDOM lures many people from restricted countries to immigrate to countries with more individual rights for the citizens. The Berlin Wall was built to block migration between West Berlin (free/democratic) and East Berlin (communist). Many people wanted to migrate to Western Europe for pure political freedoms and was given that chance when democratic governments were finally elected in 1990.
environmental push & pull factors
ENVIRONMENTAL PUSH AND PULL FACTORS
Many people migrate to new places due to the environmental factors such as climate, vegetation, attractions and activities. Many remote in the world have the infrastructure to allow people to still stay connected, have job opportunities, entertainment, and shopping. Many places with nice climate attract certain types of populations:
People who have the most threat of the physical environment live near water. Many people who are forced out of their homes by water-related disasters is because they live in a vulnerable areas such as a floodplain. A floodplain of a river is the area subject to flooding during a specific number of years, based on historical trends.
