Ancient StatesMany historians believe that political geography started in the ancient time periods of the rise of civilizations. In the Fertile Crescent (between the Tigiris and Eurphrates River), many ancient cities developed as the Neolitlic Revolution took shape.
Some of the ancient cities were ruled by powerful emperors or kings. Other cities were ruled by the people in an early development of modern day democracy. A CITY-STATE is a sovereign state that compreises a town and the surrounding countryside.

Early European StatesThe fall of the Roman Empire in 410AD lead to a period known as the Dark Ages in Europe. Many groups struggled to gain control of the land and to establish a political system. As the medieval period continued, famous kingdoms developed throughout Europe, the Middle East, and East Asia.
